PULPO PULPO BEER

The group 1965 Beer

The Group 1965 was formed in 1994 by artists born that year. The six current members—Makoto Aida, Sumihisa Arima, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Oscar Oiwa, Parco Kinoshita, and Hiroyuki Matsukage—pursue individual careers while collaborating on group projects.

Their distinct history includes exhibitions at Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, ACC Galerie Weimar, and the National Art Museum of Ukraine, as well as the Takamatsu Art Museum and Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. They have also participated in events at BankART1929, LOOP (Seoul), and the Beppu Project. Active for over 30 years, they are a pioneering Japanese artist collective.

Ogijima Barley and Future Museum

The Group 1965’s entry for the Setouchi Triennale, "Ogijima Barley and Future Museum," is a comprehensive project featuring paintings, dioramas, and video. It tells a fictional 100-year history of Ogijima, where a special local beer and miso allow residents to live past age 100.

To bring this story to life, we created the first of these fictional brews: "Pulpo Beer" (pulpo is Spanish for octopus), produced in collaboration with SETOUCHI. Reflecting its origins in the story, the can is dated with the future year "2033." We hope you enjoy this "drinkable art" alongside the exhibition.

* Setouchi Triennale 2025 concluded on November 9, 2025.

New autumn release ”OCT.P.A.”

Following the success of our summer beer "The Setting Sun," meet its autumn sister: "OCT. P. A." Inspired by the "Octo" (8) in October and Octopus, we blended hops from eight countries.

It combines Columbus, Kent Golding, and Saaz for bitterness with aromatic Hallertau Blanc, Barbe Rouge, AMORA PRETA, Riwaka, and Aramis. We also added rare hops grown by member Parco Kinoshita at our Ogijima Triennale site.

Balanced with Maris Otter malt, it retains the original’s body but with a cleaner sweetness. A charming, savory brew born for autumn.

"The New Pulpo Shining in the Autumn Sunset"
Please enjoy this harmony of eight hop varieties—brought to fruition through the collaboration between artists and the brewery during the long nights of autumn.

Original Pale Ale
“THE SETTING SUN”

Relying on memories from a late-80s London pub, we recreated the British Pale Ale that first inspired us.

More than just nostalgia, this is a modern update. We increased the British hop content to intensify the characteristic floral aroma and earthy notes. Authentic UK malts bring flavors of toast, caramel, and dried fruit, while local Kagawa wheat adds a rich, savory depth.

The keyword is, "Scoop up the setting sun and drink it dry."
This marks the birth of an Original Pale Ale for adults that truly embodies the spirit of discovering the new by learning from the past.
