The fabric is a fine-grained, supple, high-quality material called "oka." It feels good against the skin from the first use and becomes softer and more familiar with continued use.
Because it is carefully dyed by artisans using a method called hand printing (tenassen), the color penetrates through to the back, so you can use it without worrying about the front or back.
The edges are cut raw. Fraying is "a sign of heavy use," and it's an old-fashioned tenugui (hand towel) design that prioritizes quick drying and ease of use.
